Cotyledon [noun] cot·​y·​le·​don

When a seed germinates, it sends out little leaves called the cotyledon. These tiny leaves are vital to a plant’s growth because they only come out when the conditions are right. Once it makes it to the surface, cotyledon spreads out to the sun to send energy back to its roots, so the plant’s true leaves can begin to emerge. The cotyledon’s job is done when enough true leaves emerge so it is able to support itself!
